vox eternitatis
music by hildegard von bingen
medieval music concert

Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), mystic, theologian, and musician, is one of the most emblematic figures of the Middle Ages.

Her melodies stem from unique mystical experiences that occur internally, in a state of complete mental and physical alertness. The mystic sees and hears, and then expresses these visions through images, writings, and music.

Hildegard's music, for which she also wrote the texts, was created for the liturgical life in the monasteries where she served as abbess. Her compositions are highly original and often surpass the conventions of her time. They feature an extensive vocal range and expanded melismas, sometimes pushing the limits of performability.

Our interpretation of these extraordinary compositions arises from the spiritual and imaginative dimension of the texts. The continuous interplay of instruments, timbres, and rhythms seeks to musically express the vividly colorful images of the visions, which are depicted in the Codices of the time according to Hildegard’s descriptions.

This expressive dimension offers listeners a captivating and immersive experience, while adhering to the principles of historically informed performance practice.

The CD "Vox Eternitatis" is currently being released by the Dutch label Brilliant Classics.
